Healthcare is one of the largest parts of the US economy. US healthcare spending grew 3.9% in 2017, reaching $3.5 trillion ($10,739 per person) and accounting for 17.9% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product. As over 95% of healthcare organizations have adopted electronic health record systems, more and more people will have their medical records in an electronic format. In addition, information technologies such as Web 2.0 and wearable devices are revolutionizing how people engage in their healthcare. It is expected that information technologies will significantly improve health outcomes and reduce care costs. According to a recent report by BurningGlass, “demand for health informatics workers is projected to grow at twice the rate of employment overall, but there is strong evidence that the nation already faces a shortage of qualified workers in this field.” FSU School of Information Certificate in Health Informatics prepares individuals for the burgeoning field of health IT by educating students in management of health information through the use of technology. Students will be able to work with technologies to optimize acquisition, retrieval, and use of health information to facilitate healthcare delivery and health decision‐making for both clinicians and general health consumers. The Health Informatics Certificate is a highly interdisciplinary program that prepares the next generation of health informatics leaders.
