Beta Phi Mu

About Beta Phi Mu:

Founded in 1948, Beta Phi Mu recognizes the scholastic achievement and leadership potential of members LIS and others in related fields, and fosters the values of scholarship, leadership, and service in its members. The motto, Aliis inserviendo consumor , meaning “Consumed in the service of others” was selected by the founders based on the concept of dedication of librarians and other information professionals to the service of others. Eligibility for membership in Beta Phi Mu is by invitation of the faculty from an American Library Association accredited professional degree program.  Beta Phi Mu is a certified member of the Association of College Honor Societies.

Gamma Chapter:

The Gamma Chapter of Beta Phi Mu was organized at the Florida State University Library School on July 25, 1957, and its legacy continues today at the Florida State University iSchool. The Chapter bylaws outline the membership criteria for selection to the Honor Society which is invitation-only for graduates of the MLIS program.

Founding:

Beta Phi Mu Honor SocietyBeta Phi Mu, the library and information science honor society, was founded at the University of Illinois in August, 1948, by a group of leading librarians and library educators. Aware of the notable achievements of honor societies in other professions, they believed that such a society would have much to offer librarianship and library education. The first initiation was held in the spring of 1949 at the University of Illinois. The society was ably served by Rolland Stevens as first President and Harold Lancour as first Executive Secretary. Its significance was recognized in 1968 when Beta Phi Mu was formally admitted to membership in the Association of College Honor Societies.
